Testing Preperation
Before coming in for a diagnostic test, it may be helpful to discuss the following questions with your healthcare provider:
-
What test will be performed?
-
Why has this test been ordered?
-
What type of sample is required (blood, saliva, urine, semen, stool, or hair)?
-
When should I expect my test results?
-
How will the results influence my treatment or care plan?
If you are currently taking biotin or are thinking about starting a biotin-containing supplement, be sure to discuss this with your healthcare provider.
In some cases, special preparation is necessary to ensure the most accurate test results. Preparation instructions may include:
-
Fasting (avoiding food or certain foods) for several hours or overnight
-
Increasing or decreasing your usual water intake
-
Temporarily avoiding certain medications, vitamins, or herbal supplements before testing
-
It is important to speak with your healthcare provider about all medications and supplements you are taking, including over-the-counter products, before making any changes prior to laboratory testing.
Specimen Collection Instructions
If you are bringing a specimen to the laboratory, special handling or transportation instructions may apply. Your healthcare provider should give you written instructions explaining how to prepare for your test. Please follow these instructions carefully and exactly as provided.
If you are unsure whether preparation is required or have questions about the instructions you received, contact your healthcare provider’s office for clarification.
